Gotham Taekwon-do's distance learning program is a modern-day martial arts program. "Improvement of mind and body" is the essence of martial arts practice, and is also one of our school mottos. We believe that in order for our students to consistently improve their mental and physical well being, our classes should be accessible to them regardless of distance and location. Martial arts practice is a way of life and should not be limited by external circumstances.
Our distance learning program is a combination of weekly worksheets, video tutorials, and online classes. Besides the physical training, there is also a weekly theme (for example, perseverance, mindfulness, discipline). The weekly theme reinforces small but important life lessons and will be discussed during the online classes. Students will also reflect on the topic in the writing section of the worksheet so they can fully understand and learn how to apply these values in their everyday lives. Self-reflection gives students the opportunity to learn about themselves and apply these life lessons into their lives and to the people around them.
Besides the theme of the week, the worksheet also includes a training curriculum, questions of the week, and a weekly progress chart. The worksheet encourages students to keep track of their progress and build positive and healthy routines. They will mark their progress in the chart and parents will be required to sign off each worksheet towards the end of each week. Parents' acknowledgment can hugely motivate the students to work hard and commit to their training.
The Martial Arts school serves as a second home to a lot of us, teachers and students included, and we do not want to take that away. The distance learning program can teach students to train remotely and independently, and more importantly, help preserve the sense of community. A stronger bond is being fostered as students can see each other during online classes and that they're training and growing together as a whole.
