Motor Learning and Development

As parents, we should keep in mind that our children will demonstrate varying levels of affordance when they learn or perform a motor skill. The challenges of a growing body may affect how they can perceive, internalize, and demonstrate the techniques. Therefore, we have specifically developed three programs (Little Heroes, Martial Mind, and Juniors Taekwon-do) to address the challenges of growing, young individuals.

As martial arts educators, our concern is to develop quality and flexible training methods that build a foundation for students to grow, based on their motor development milestones. A younger student may learn modified-motor skills with fewer time constraints, whereas a more experienced student will be challenged to demonstrate a martial art form or pattern.

Character Development

There is abundant academic research supporting the claims of traditional martial arts as one of the best approaches to character development in children. Today, our children live in a fast-paced, accessible world due to the wonders of modern technology and the influence of social media. Many tend to focus heavily on a fast-tracking lifestyle and instant gratification. Gotham Martial Arts is the home of martial arts education, and it is our responsibility to help our students shape their lives. Our goal is to support our students to improve their mind and body, overcome social-emotional challenges, develop self-discipline, and balance their appreciation of modern-day technology.

Cultural Intelligence

Also known as Cultural Quotient (CQ), Cultural Intelligence is the ability to adapt to new cultural settings with confidence. Research indicates that individuals with high cultural intelligence are more successful on international projects, as they are able to adjust to living and working within new cultural environments. The cultural and philosophical aspects of traditional martial arts is an important part of students' training at Gotham Taekwon-do. The culture and practice we teach may also be observed in social settings outside our school. We believe such practice will increase students' cultural intelligence.
